You can only change system-named fields, columns or phrases for a custom (non-system) dictionary.
Change System Field Names
You can update a system field name from the Edit Layout window. To change a field name:
- From the screen with the field name you need to change, click the Edit Layout link in the lower right corner. The Edit Layout window opens.
- Hover over the field name you want to change.
- Click the Edit Browser Phrase button that displays on the right. The Edit Browser Phrase window opens.
- Enter the new field name into the User Phrase field.
- Select the Browser Phrase Usage tab.
- View where the field name is used. Changing the field name changes the field name on all screens listed in the tab.
- Click OK.
- Click OK on the Edit Layout window.
Change System Column Names
You can update a system column name from the Column Settings window. To change a column name:
- From the screen with the field name you need to change, right-click on the column headers.
- Select Show Columns. The Column Settings window opens.
- Hover to the right of the column you want to change and click on the three dots that display.
- Select Edit Browser Phrase. The Edit Browser Phrase window opens.
- Enter the new field name into the User Phrase field.
- Select the Browser Phrase Usage tab.
- View where the column name is used. Changing the column name changes the column name on all screens listed in the tab.
- Click OK.
- Click OK on the Column Settings window.
Change a System Phrase
You can update system phrases used in messages and public-facing applications from the Dictionaries page.
- Click the Dictionaries link from the Main Menu. The Dictionaries page opens.
- Select the dictionary with the phrase to update.
- Right-click and select Find and Replace v30 Phrases. The Find and Replace v30 Phrases window opens.
- Use the available filters to locate the desired dictionary phrase.
- For the dictionary phrase you want to change, enter the new phrase into the User Phrase field.
- Repeat step 4 for all dictionary phrases you want to update.
- Click the Save button.
Change System Field Name, Column Name and Phrase Security
Changing system field names, column names and phrases is controlled by the Allow Editing of Dictionary Phrases By Window system access privilege. Users and/or roles assigned to the privilege are allowed to change system field names, column names and phrases. Any users not assigned to the privilege are not able to change system field names, column names and phrases. If no users are assigned to the privilege, it is considered inactive and no users can change system field names, column names and phrases.
This access privilege is a system access privilege. You can access it from the System Access Privileges screen on the Main Menu.

Is it possible to change the name of a Field Name for all the users? I tried this procedure but it changes the Field Name just for myself, not for all the users.

Hi Leo,
The phrase is only changed in the dictionary that is assigned to you so make sure your users are using the same dictionary you are using. You can see the dictionary assigned to your users by showing the Dictionary column on the Users screen.
Thanks,
Maggie

Hi,
I believe we are still using V19 of UB. I can't seem to find: "Allow Editing of Dictionary Phrases by Window" in the "access privileges" menu. Should I be looking elsewhere or for a different phrase?
Thanks

Hi Marsha Hovers,
Make sure you are looking under System Access Privileges off the Main Menu rather than the Access Privileges screen. There are two different menu options but this access privilege is only available from the System Access Privileges screen.
Thanks!

Got it thanks! Is there a way to get the 'Edit Layout' screen? As I still can't seem to change any fields. Would the attached text be a concern? Not sure what version we are in.
Thanks

Hi Marsha,
You are using v20 so version isn't an issue.
To get to the Edit Layout screen, you need to navigate to the screen that has the field you want to change. We'll use the Market Segment field on the Add/Edit Account screen for an example:
1. Click the Accounts - Event Sales link from the Main Menu. The Event Accounts | Event Sales screen opens.
2. Right-click on any account and selected Edit. The Edit Account screen opens.
3. In the lower right corner, you should see an Edit Layout link:
That opens the Edit Layout screen for the Add/Edit Account screen. This Edit Layout link is available on screens throughout Ungerboeck so just navigate to the screen that has the field you want to change, click the Edit Layout link and then you can proceed with changing the field name.
If you don't see the Edit Layout link, then you need to update the Allow Modification of Layout by Theme system access privilege (in the same screen that you used for the Allow Editing of Dictionary Phrases By Window privilege). Make sure you are assigned to the privilege and you are assigned to the Theme for your user. You can see your theme by clicking on your user name at the top right and selecting User Settings. Locate the Theme drop-down and see which one is assigned to you.
I know that is a lot of information so let me know if you need more help!
Thanks,
Maggie

Hi Maggie,
Thank you very much for your help. Very helpful. I wasn't assigned to any of those privileges and was able to change them around so I now have access.
What does a particular "Theme" determine for me?
I was able to edit some of them but not the ones which have "(user fields)" next to them. How do I change these?
Apologies for the long thread and questions. This has been very helpful!

Hi Marsha Hovers,
Those descriptions are created/maintained in the Opportunity Type.

Thanks Sean for helping out! Marsha Hovers, Sean is correct - you change those descriptions from the Opportunity Types screen.
Themes allow you to customize the fields that display on screens throughout Ungerboeck. For example, your organization might have a Sales Theme that has fields specific to the Sales Team available to them on the Add/Edit Event screen. Your organization might also have an Operations Theme that has fields specific to the Operations on the Add/Edit Event screen. You then assign a theme to each user so they have the screens laid out in the way that works best for them.
We do have a great System Administrator course coming up in AP that dives into the details of themes, controlling system access, using dictionaries, etc. if you are interested in learning more! Here's the link with more information - https://ungerboeck.com/instructor-led/course--application-administration-ap-0920.
Let us know if you have any more questions. We are happy to help!
Thanks,
Maggie

In v30.96C - noticed that my dictionary phrases have reverted back to their original names. When I go in to change them to our user phrases, they are there but are not applying.
I have confirmed that I am assigned the Minneapolis Convention Center Dictionary (26).
Am I missing something here????

Hi Chris,
There are some changes made to dictionary phrases in v30.96C. Talking with the team here, sounds like someone was able to work with you on getting the changes you need. Let me know if there is anything additional you run across.
Thanks!
