Product categories are the highest level of categorization for products and services. You can assign products with shared characteristics to a product category. Product groups are sub-categories within a product category. For example, you have a product category named Beverages and within that product category, you can create product groups for Soft Drinks and Alcohol.

Add a Product Category and Product Group
- Click the Product Categories link from the Main Menu. The Product Categories screen opens.
- Click the Add button. The Add Product Category screen opens.
- Enter the following information:
- Description - Name of the product category.
- Code - Unique alphanumeric value.
- If you are not adding product groups, click OK and you are done. If you are adding product groups, click the Save (disk) button and proceed to the next step.
- Select the Product Groups tab.
- Click the Add button. The Add Product Group screen opens.
- Enter the following information:
- Description - Name of the product group.
- Category - Defaults to the category created in step 4.
- Inventory - If checked, the product group is available for selection when adding an inventory item.
- Code - Unique alphanumeric value.
- Click OK. You return to the Edit Product Category screen.
- Repeat steps 6 - 8 for each product category.
- Click OK on the Edit Product Category screen when complete.
Change a Product Category or Product Group Information
You can change the information for the product category and/or product group after you have created it. When you change the information for a product category and/or product group, it updates wherever the product category and/or product group is used. If you don't want to update the already existing product category and/or product group data, then you must add a new product category and/or product group using the steps in Add a Product Category and Product Group.
To update a product category:
- Click the Product Categories link from the Main Menu. The Product Categories screen opens.
- Select the product category to edit.
- Right-click and select Edit. The Edit Product Category screen opens.
- Update the necessary information.
- Click OK.
To update a product group:
- Click the Product Categories link from the Main Menu. The Product Categories screen opens.
- Select the product category with the product group to edit.
- Right-click and select Edit. The Edit Product Category screen opens.
- Select the Product Groups tab.
- Select the product group to edit.
- Right-click and select Edit. The Edit Product Group screen opens.
- Update the necessary information.
- Click OK. You return to the Edit Product Category screen.
- Click OK.
Delete a Product Category or Product Group
If you no longer use a product category or product group and don't want to keep a record of it, you can delete it. You cannot delete product categories or product groups assigned to products. You cannot undo the delete process.
To delete a product category:
- Click the Product Categories link from the Main Menu. The Product Categories screen opens.
- Select the product category to delete.
- Right-click and select Mark for Delete.
- Click Save.
To delete a product group:
- Click the Product Categories link from the Main Menu. The Product Categories screen opens.
- Select the product category with the product group to delete.
- Right-click and select Edit. The Edit Product Category screen opens.
- Select the Product Groups tab.
- Select the product group to delete.
- Right-click and select Mark for Delete.
- Click OK.
