You use function categories to classify functions into groups. They are often used for reporting purposes. You can use function categories to group, sort and total to gather information about the type of functions taking place.
You assign function categories to usages. When you assign a usage to a function, the function category is automatically assigned. The function category is not editable on the Event Functions screen, Functions tab or Edit Function screen.
Add a Function Category
- Click the Function Categories link from the Main Menu. The Function Categories screen opens.
- Click the Add button. The Add Function Category screen opens.
- Enter the name of the function category into the Description field.
- Enter a unique alphanumeric value into the Code field.
- Click OK.
Change a Function Category
You can change the description of a function category after you have created it. When you change the description for a function category, it updates wherever the function category is used. If you don't want to update the already existing function category data, then you must add a new function category using the steps in Add a Function Category.
- Click the Function Categories link from the Main Menu. The Function Categories screen opens.
- Select the function category to edit.
- Right-click and select Edit. The Edit Function Category screen opens.
- Update the desired information.
- Click OK.
Delete a Function Category
If you no longer use a function category and don't want to keep a record of it, you can delete it. When you delete a function category that is assigned to a usage, you receive a prompt to select a function category to replace the function category you are deleting. You cannot undo the delete or delete and replace process.
- Click the Function Categories link from the Main Menu. The Function Categories screen opens.
- Right-click on the function category to delete.
- Select Mark for Delete.
- Click the Save button. If the function category is used, the Replace screen opens.

Are there any other prerequisites needed for the function category column to display created function categories?
I have added categories but am still unable to select from the dropdown.

Which window are you in?
I think the category may have to be assigned to a 'usage' - not sure though

Function Category is not editable on the Functions grid or Edit Function.
Theresa is correct, they are assigned to Usages and through the Usage assigned to the Function the Category is automatically assigned and may then be used for reporting, grouping, sorting, etc.
I will ask that the article be updated.
