When adding a HTML link to your iEBMS Presentation files (Structure/Top/Left/Right/Bottom), or editing an item in the Dictionary to include a link, the code for the link will be similar to the following:
<a href="URL">Click Here</a>
Where URL is the website/webpage that you want to link to.
Depending on you requirements, you may also have a few extra attributes within the HTML tag also.
The code above will open the page specified, however it will open it in the same window/tab.
Occasionally you may want to open the link in a new window/tab. To achieve this, use the following code:
<a href="URL" target="_blank">Click Here</a>
Further information about the 'a' element and the 'target' attribute can be found in the HTML 4.01 specifications:
- 'a' element: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/links.html#edef-A
- 'target' attribute: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/present/frames.html#adef-target
- Recognized Frame Names: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/types.html#type-frame-target
Please note that the exact behavior of the target="_blank" attribute will depend on the browser that is being used. Some browsers will open the linked page in a new window, whereas others will open it in a new tab. Some browsers will let you modify this behavior within the browser options/settings/preferences, however this has to be changed within the users browser and cannot be controlled via the HTML code.
